Common Materials Used in Belt Conveyors
The commonly used material for belt conveyors is glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GRP). GRP is short for glass-fiber-reinforced composite material. Composite materials are composed of two or more constituent materials with distinct chemical or physical properties. Composites are classified as particle-reinforced or fiber-reinforced. In the case of GRP, the matrix is a resin, and the reinforcement consists of glass fibers; GRP can be further divided into continuous-fiber and discontinuous-fiber types. Continuous-fiber GRP is typically fabricated through laminated structures, filament winding, or multidirectional weaving, whereas discontinuous-fiber GRP is produced by compression molding.
There are numerous forming processes for fiberglass-reinforced plastics; in China, hand lay-up, compression molding, and filament winding are commonly used, while pultrusion is rapidly developing and often employs spray and jet processes as well.
Resins are used as matrices and binders; thermosetting resins such as unsaturated polyesters, epoxies, and phenolics are commonly employed, while thermoplastic resins like polyolefins are also utilized. The strength of the bonding resin and its adhesion to the fibers determine the interlaminar shear strength of fiberglass-reinforced plastics, whereas the tensile strength and stiffness of these materials are primarily governed by the glass fibers. In contrast, compressive and flexural strengths are influenced by both the matrix and the reinforcement.
Both synthetic resins and alkali-free glass fibers are non-metallic materials, endowing fiberglass-reinforced plastic with excellent electrical insulation, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and radio wave transmission properties. Its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, as well as its design flexibility, all surpass those of steel, making it suitable for use in the design of belt conveyors.
